Written by Sun Shuang from the Department of Politics

Supported by BAI, I studied in Duke University for half a year as a visiting scholar on December 1st, 2016.Duke University is a comprehensive university and topped rankings in eighth in United States, which has the extremely high attainments in academic research. The visiting report summary is as follows:

During the visiting, I took part in more than ten academic lectures and three international academic conferences, whose topics involved in the areas of political theory and political practice in the United States; democracy, elections, political transformation in China. Through these seminars and meetings, I know more clearly about political science theory, domestic politics, and China's political problems in the eyes of foreign scholars.

I gradually understand the real American society after visiting the United States. For example, the demonstrations against President Trump, the health care system, the experience of social security and the education system and so on. Since China has large population but limited resources, we should think about how to push forward the political, economy and social development with Chinese Characteristics.

Besides, I gained an insight into the problems of the American middle class through attending the political sociology and other related courses and reading a large number of academic works and papers in English. I also interviewed some representative personage in middle class in North Carolina.

Finally, thanks to the Beijing municipal government and BAI which always support our young teachers to conduct research and study abroad. I'll apply the knowledge I learned to teaching, research and decision-making consultation in my future.
