Oral English Class for Graduate Students

2011-09-13

In order to help improve the graduate students’ oral English fluency, Dept. of Graduate Students and Dept. of International Cooperation & Exchange of BAI invited Professor Lin Xue of DVC and language expert Mr. Jim Holmes from the U.S. to give graduate students oral English courses from June 17th to 25th of 2010. Seventeen graduate students from Grade 2009 participated in the oral English training courses.

Speaking English in 9 days

In designing and preparing the courses, the two teachers took into full consideration the facts that the students’ oral English are not at the same level and there are sone middle-aged students over 35 years old. The teachers first had some communications with students about their opinions on oral English before the class. “The IQ doesn’t matter too much in whether we can speak out English fluently or not, The interaction between our muscle and cranial nerve does matter a lot”, said Jim. On hearing this, the students became more confident in learing oral English as their mental pressure was released.

In order to teach the students to pronounce correctly, the teachers also prepared for everyone a little mirror to help them remember the correct shape of mouth. They also used their rest time to talk with students while walking on the campus to help them practice and improve their oral English. With the encouragement and help of the teachers, even the students who were not good at oral English could speak out bravely beginning from the second or third course. Some of them even asked for more courses to practice with teachers.

Through the 9 days’ intensive learning, the students have increased their interests of English doubly. They all admited the courses were diversified in form, richful in content and lively in style. Their oral English have been improved greatly after the training courses.
