The director of the Institute for Global Chinese Affairs in University of Maryland Dr. Robert Daly visited BAI recently, and gave a lecture entitled “Sino-US Cross-cultural Communication and Dialogue”.
Dr. Daly briefly reviewed the thirty-year history of Sino-US dialogue and cooperation. He acknowledged that despite the remarkable achievements, there are still some misunderstandings, doubts and problems between the two sides. He elaborated on the similarities and differences between Chinese and American cultures regarding conventions of international communication, and the performance by each side. He pointed out that we should be proud of our own culture and at the same time we should remain open to different cultures. He also emphasized a world of cultural diversity requires us to show mutual respect, step up dialogue, and push forward exchanges. In conclusion, despite the various challenges and difficulties for deeper Sino-US dialogue and cooperation, we should endeavor to advance dialogue owing to the significance of Sino-US relations in the 21st century.
