“Speak English in 9 Days Workshop” was delivered for 1stgrade full-time graduate students in BAI from May 31stto June 9th.
Professor Jim Holmes, Professor Sheree Lin and Director Frank Lin from the Bay
Areas of USA presented how to improve English speaking and introduced American
culture to students.
The workshop adopted three principles of pronunciation
which were Open Your Mouth, Use Your Tongue, and Finish Your Words. The
majority of the classroom time was devoted to pronunciation practice with
individual sounds, words, and sentences. The teaching methods were diversified,
such as word drill, dialogue in pairs, role play, movie watching, and word
guessing competition. Each student received individual feedback from the
instructors regarding their strengths and weakness, and was encouraged to use
the Conversation practice time to address their respective issues.
To share their insights in cross cultural
communication with the faculty and students in BAI, the three instructors held
an academic seminar to present the challenges, strategies and reflection in the
respect. Professor Jim Holmes compared three different ways that Jesuit
missionariespreach their religionin
Indian, Japan and China. Professor Sheree Lin focused on the Confucius colleges
in the U.S.. Director Frank Lin talked about how arts and entertainment cross
culture by sharing his personal experience in filming the movie Great Wall with
Zhang Yimou.
To equip students with profound American culture, the
instructors use their spare time to carry out American dance activities and share
their experience of travelling around the world. Rich extra-curriculum
activities immersed students in a relaxed learning atmosphere and helped
students improve their English listening and speaking abilities.
As the characteristics of BAI, “Speak English in 9
Days Workshop” has been held for 11 consecutive years, benefiting over 200
full-time graduate students in BAI and winning popularity among students and
faculty members. The workshop has not only expanded students’ international
perspective, but also strengthened international cooperation and exchange
between BAI and the outside world.
