BAI’ s Visiting Scholars (2015-2016) Completed Their Programs

BAI sent 3 visiting scholars in the year 2015 and they all came back with fruitful achievements. The three scholars are Ms. Ma Xiaohong, associate professor of the Department of Sociology, Mr. Wei Lei, associate professor of the Department of Party History and Party Building, and Ms. Cai Yang, lecturerof the Department of Politics. Following is a brief summary of their experience abroad.

 

Ms. Ma Xiaohong


Ms. Maspent halfayear in Maryland Population Research Center (MPRC),University of Maryland in the United Statesas a visiting scholar from December 23rd,2015 to June 11th,2016.Her visiting activities include:

  • From Jan 27 to May 11, 2016,taking the course Population and Societyby Professor Chen Feinian in the Sociology Department. The course was three hours each week and the Chinese fertility policy was covered in the course.
  • OnApril 22,delivering a lecture in MPRC special workshop.The title was China's Family Planning Policy: Past, Present and Future.
  • From March 31 to April2,taking part in2016 Population Association of America(PAA)Annual Meeting.
  • From Feb 12 to May11,participating in the SAS and STATAstatistical software programby MPRC, twiceperweek.
  • From Jan 27 to May 11,participating in the MondaySeminareach weekand 5 Special workshops in MPRC.
  • April 26-27,attending the Chinese Society after one–child Policy and Hyper Economic Growth population conference in Population Studies and Training Center (PSTC ) of Brown University.
  • Visiting the population center in Harvard University,University of Pennsylyania, University of North Carolina and University of Stanford during visiting period.
  • Conducting research work about fertility policy, large city development and Capital Population in Congress Library and American National Archives, etc. 

 

 

Mr. Wei Lei


Mr. Wei Lei arrived at Hoover Institute on Dec.7 2015, andwentthrough the admission procedures in theStanfordUniversityin thefollowingday.Hecompleted three tasksfrom Dec. 9th2015 to May 17th,2016.


First,he undertook research based ona large number of materials about Modern China Studies in Hoover Institution and Green Library, such as 900 pictures of modern China, the Dixie mission file, “Watching Communist China, 1949-79: A Methodological Review of China Studies in the United States of America and Taiwan”, Chiang Kai-shek Diaries(1937-1945),The China Leadership Monitor(2002——2016),etc.


Second, he attended several academic seminars, such as“Soft Power in China-U.S. Relations” inThe Center for East Asian StudiesonFeb.19th,“Wang Jingwei Traitor Group” inHoover Instituteon Mar. 19th, “Taiwan and TPP” onApr. 15th,“Rebuilding Trust: China-U.S. Relations”inAsia-Pacific Research CenteronMay 10th, 2016.He also interviewed some famous scholars,suchasTai-chun Kuo, Andrew Walder,David M. Lampton, etc. Meanwhilehe took part ina Modern China Studiescourse, given byAndrew Walder.


Third, he finished four papers:Review of the research on the Anti-Japanese War,Review of the research ontheCultural Revolution in U.S.,Review of Sino-Japanese War, andNew trend of contemporary Chinese Studies in the United States.


Mr. Wei came back to China on May 17th,2016.




Ms. Cai Yang


Ms.Cai studied in Rikkyo University from February 24thto August 21st, 2016. According to the plan, one semester's study and work mainly involves four aspects: taking class, attending academic conferences and lectures, field investigation and reporting.


First, Ms.Cai took part in some relevent courses. According toherprofessional background and project requirements,shechosetwo courses and two seminars from Rikkyo University and Tokyo University.Two courses were“History of Japanese Politics”by Professor Matsuura Masahiroin Rikkyo University and “Chinese Modern and Contemporary Politics”by Professor Takahara Masaaki in Tokyo University.Two seminars were the “Iwanami Lectures” ( “Frontiers of Japanese Social Science”) by Prof. Matsuura Masahirofrom the Rikkyo University and the “Neighborhood Building” by Yakusimaru seijiro from the Rikkyo University.


Second,Ms.Cai attended some academic conferences and lectures,including: Chinese-Japanese International cademic Conference (twice), Japanese Academic Circle Academic Seminar (twice), and Political Science Seminar of Rikkyo University (twice).


The international academic conferences she participated inwere“State Governance & the Development of Bilateral Relations:Japan and China Academic Dialogue” inTokyo University on June 11th, and “The Regional Peace and Civil Society in East Asia” inWasedaUniversityon July 9th.


The local academic conferencesshe participated inwere:“The 17th Regular Meeting and Academic Symposium of Asian Political Science Association ”in Tokyo University on March 26th,and “The Book Review of Matsuyama Megumi`s‘The Urban History of Edo-Tokyo: City, Architecture, Society’” in Keiou University on June 18th.


Moreover Ms.Cai participated in two Doctoral Dissertation Seminars of the Department of Political Science in Rikkyo University on May 17th and July 12th.


In addition to the academic conference,Ms.Cai also attended several lectures by the officials of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.


Finally,as a summary of the half-year visit,Ms.Caiwas invited to give a lecture entitled “Expression of Interest in Urban Redevelopment” on July 27that the Law School of Rikkyo University.
