US Professors Introduced Differences between Chinese and US Cultures

2013-09-06

Recently, Sheree Lin and Jim Holmes from the US held an international forum on “Differences between Chinese and US cultures—Starting from Diet, healthcare and Hollywood” whose themes were life, health and Hollywood movies.

The topics of the lecture were respectively “US culture in daily lives”, “US healthcare” and “The development path of Hollywood”. Professor Lin explained the characteristics of the US general public’s clothing, dining, housing and transportation and the difference between them and those of China. She especially introduced the routines and rules of US education, entertainment and treating people and handling matters. As a clinical expert, Jim presented to us the evolvement of US healthcare policy since the Second World War till now and its implications on US relationship between doctors and patients. Each shift of healthcare policy is the result of games among all forces of US society. He analyzed the influence of the Obama Administration’s healthcare policy on his public approval ratings. Lan Boru is a Hollywood director from China and has an international vision based on his years of experience in film-making in Los-Angeles. Starting from the question of what constitutes a Hollywood movie, he guided us to the fact that the success of Hollywood movies was the result of generations of people’s continuous efforts. The core spirit of Hollywood is innovation. (Where there are new thinking, new technologies and new market, there is the presence of Hollywood as long as it sharply senses the values in them.) Besides, Hollywood recognized the bright prospect in China and accelerated its entering of the Chinese market, which will bring both opportunities and challenges to the Chinese film industry.

The discussion of topics of daily life, healthcare and films serves as an international cultural feast. The demeanor, healthcare and film appreciation are all components of international cultural exchanges, benefiting the audience in getting a better understanding of the world and expanding their visions.
